The next morning, area newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, carried the death of Father Juliano on the front page. Most of the papers mentioned Alex as a person of interest. I read the stories to see how badly reporters had quoted me. Most got it close.

I was at the San Felipe Store, drinking hot tea, reading the Los Angeles Times story when my cell phone went off.

“Mr. Rodney Foo?” said a voice like sparkling Italian wine.

“Uh-huh.”

“This is Nicole Moscone. I am…was…am…I don’t know the correct English. I am Father Juliano’s sister.”

“I didn’t know he had a sister.”

“He does and I am her.”

“Okay. What can I do for you?”

“I’d like very much to meet with you?”

“I guess that could be arranged. Where are you now?”

“I am staying at the San Felipe Casino Hotel.”

“Okay, I am at the San Felipe Store right now. You know where it is?”

“I think. It is across from the mission, yes?”

“Yes. Come over. Meet me here.”

“Now?”

“Sure.”

“Very good. I’ll be there in thirty minutes? A girl’s got to dress, you know.”

“I’ll be here.”
